Can I do a Tape Jointer NVQ without going to college?

Yes. If you're already working as a tape jointer, you can complete your Level 2 NVQ entirely in the workplace. There is no need to attend college. Your assessor visits your site, observes your work, reviews your evidence and carries out professional discussions..

How Do I Get a Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card?

After successfully completing the Level 2 tape jointer NVQ, you can apply for the Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Card (subject to meeting the current CSCS requirements, including the appropriate Health, Safety and Environment Test where required). The card proves you are a qualified tape jointer and is requested by many construction employers.

What Evidence Do I Need?

To achieve your Level 2 Drylining Finishing NVQ, you'll need to demonstrate that you can carry out your work safely and to industry standards. Don't worry – if you're already working as a tape jointer, you'll likely be completing much of this work every day.

Your assessor will guide you through the process and explain exactly what evidence is required.

What Evidence Do I Need?

Site Photographs

You'll provide photographs of your completed tape jointing work throughout the assessment. This may include preparing plasterboard joints, applying joint tape, filling joints, internal and external angles, sanding, finishing work and completed walls and ceilings.

Short Videos

Short video clips recorded on site help demonstrate your practical skills. These videos usually last less than one minute and show you carrying out normal tape jointing activities as part of your everyday work.

Workplace Observation

Your assessor will observe you carrying out drylining finishing activities in your normal working environment. This allows you to demonstrate your competence while working on site, without attending college or completing practical tests elsewhere.

Professional Discussion

You'll have an informal discussion with your assessor about the work you've completed. This gives you the opportunity to explain your methods, health and safety knowledge, materials used, finishing techniques and how you achieve a high-quality finish that meets industry standards.

Knowledge Questions

You'll complete straightforward knowledge questions covering topics such as health and safety, preparing work areas, applying jointing compounds, using tape jointing tools and equipment, sanding techniques, quality control and safe working practices. Your assessor will support you throughout the process.

Witness Testimonies (Where Required)

In some cases, your site supervisor or employer may be asked to confirm that you regularly carry out tape jointing and drylining finishing work on site. This helps support your assessment where appropriate.

We'll Support You Every Step of the Way

Our experienced assessors will explain exactly what evidence is needed and guide you through the entire assessment process. Most experienced tape jointers already have the skills required to achieve the qualification – the Level 2 NVQ simply provides formal recognition of the work you already carry out every day on site.

Who Can Complete This Drylining Finishing NVQ?

The Level 2 Drylining Finishing (Tape Jointing) NVQ is designed for experienced workers who are already carrying out tape jointing and drylining finishing work on construction sites or commercial and residential projects.

You may be suitable if you are:

  • An employed tape jointer or drylining finisher
  • Self-employed or CIS registered

What Will I Be Assessed On?

Your assessor will observe you carrying out your normal day-to-day tape jointing and drylining finishing work. The assessment is based on the work you already complete on site rather than artificial test conditions.

Typical assessment activities include:

  • Preparing plasterboard joints and work areas
  • Applying joint tape and jointing compounds
  • Filling, feathering and finishing plasterboard joints
  • Sanding joints to achieve a smooth, paint-ready finish
  • Forming internal and external angles

Your assessor will explain exactly what evidence is required and support you throughout your assessment.
